Wally Navasie
Tungwup Ta-amu
/ Whipper's Uncle
9 1/2"
H with 1 1/4" base
"Despite the fact that
this figure is known as the Whipper's Uncle, he does not appear
with the Hu or Tungwup Kachinas who initiate the children. Instead
he appears as a guard during the Bean Dance Parade or Procession
on Second and Third Mesa.
"Fewkes lists him as
belonging to the Tungwup group on First Mesa but does not at
any time place him in the initiation group in his descriptions.
Thus it would seem that he is the uncle of other whipper kachinas
and should possibly appear in the Mixed Dances."

Wally Navasie is a talented
carver from First Mesa. He has been carving most of his life
and is well known for his Butterfly Maidens and other sculptural
pieces.
We are pleased to see Wally's
full-figure carvings living up to the standard he is capable
of. We feel fortunate to have this nice example at a good price.
Wally has been featured in
several publications over the years, including Theda Bassman's
"Hopi Kachina Dolls and Their Carvers."
